Best Shopify Checkout Apps for 70% Cart Abandonment: Which Help and Which Hurt
Shopify's own replacement instruction is short: move tracking to pixels in Customer events, and move everything visible to app blocks in the editor.
It's a good moment to look at what your checkout apps actually do, because most of what gets sold as a checkout app doesn't run where you'd assume.
Why Checkout Apps Rarely Fix Cart Abandonment
Take out the 42% of abandoners who were just browsing, and Baymard's 2025 list of reasons starts like this: extra costs too high (40%), delivery too slow (20%), didn't trust the site with card details (19%), account creation required (18%). Further down sit a checkout that's too long or complicated, and website errors or crashes.
Look at what's on that list and what isn't. Nobody abandons because there wasn't an upsell. The reasons an app could plausibly touch sit further down the list, the long checkout and the errors, and an app is just as capable of making those worse.
The fixes for costs, account walls and payment options live in your settings, and we covered them in Shopify checkout optimization. This guide is about the apps.
The Four Places a Checkout App Can Sit
That second sentence is in Shopify's developer documentation almost word for word, and it rules out a lot of what you see in app screenshots.

Shopify's documentation is precise about the post-purchase page: it appears after the order is confirmed and before the Thank you page. An offer there can't lose the sale it follows, because that sale has already happened.
Before or After the Pay Button: The Math
Here's the moment it happens. She's on her phone, card details autofilled, thumb over the pay button. A box slides in: add a travel size for $12? She reads it, checks whether it's already in her cart, and now she's making a second decision on the one screen where she'd already made the first.
Upsells do raise AOV. That part is real, and the app dashboard will show it to you every morning. What the dashboard won't show is how many people left at that box, because they don't count as upsell declines. They count as abandoned checkouts, and they land in a different report.
Here's an illustrative example, our numbers rather than a benchmark. A thousand people reach checkout, half complete, and the average order is $80. That's $40,000.
Add a $20 offer inside checkout that 10% of buyers take. AOV rises to $82. If the extra decision costs you 3% of completions, 485 people finish instead of 500, and you take $39,770. AOV went up and revenue went down by $230.
Put the same offer after payment with the same 10% take rate. All 500 complete, 50 of them add $20, and you take $41,000.
Same offer, same take rate, $1,230 apart on a thousand checkouts. The stores that get this right read revenue per checkout. The ones that get it wrong read AOV, watch it rise, and call it a win.
That doesn't make every pre-payment offer a mistake. It makes it a test, with checkout completion as the guardrail that decides whether the offer stays.
ReConvert, Rebuy and Bold: Where Each One Belongs
ReConvert Post Purchase Upsell. Rated 4.8 from 3,097 reviews. Free up to 50 orders, then from $9.99 a month up to 2,000 orders. It places offers on product pages, in the cart, on post-purchase and Thank you pages, and in checkout on Plus. Where it earns its keep is the space after payment, where the offer can't cost you the order. Skip it if you sell one product with nothing sensible to add after purchase.
Rebuy Personalization Engine. Rated 4.7 from 854 reviews. Paid plans from $25 a month, priced by order volume. Its strength is the cart, meaning the Smart Cart drawer and the recommendations inside it. That's also the zone where an offer comes before payment, so run it as a test with checkout completion as the guardrail. Skip it if your catalog is small enough that recommendations keep showing the same two products.
Bold AI Upsell & Cross-Sell. Rated 4.4 from 596 reviews. Free to install with a 3.5% commission on upsell revenue, or $10 a month plus 2.5%. It covers product pages, cart, post-purchase, email, and checkout on Plus. Commission pricing is cheap while upsell revenue is small and grows with it. At $20,000 a month in upsell revenue, 3.5% is $700 a month, which is when a flat plan elsewhere starts to look better.
One more note on Bold. If a list you're reading recommends Bold Checkout as a Shopify app, check before you trust it. Bold's Shopify App Store listing had no checkout app in it when we looked in October 2026.
What You Don't Need an App For
One-page checkout became Shopify's default checkout in October 2023, according to Shopify's changelog. If you're searching for a Shopify one page checkout app, the checkout you have is probably already one page.
Abandoned checkout emails are built in too. In your admin, go to Apps, then Messaging, then Automations, and switch on the abandoned checkout automation. A dedicated email platform can do more with the sequence, and our checkout guide covers when that's worth it. The basic recovery email costs nothing.
So a "reduce cart abandonment app" is usually one of two things. Either an email tool, which is useful, or an offer placed somewhere near the pay button, which is a test.
What Changed on August 26
Shopify's upgrade guide is explicit that customizations made in additional scripts, including tracking and analytics, need to be replaced on the new versions of the pages.
Two things tend to live there. Tracking pixels, which now belong in Customer events. And post-purchase content added by hand or by older apps, which now has to come from an app that supports the new pages.
If something broke, the first sign is likely to be quiet. A conversion count in your ad platform that dipped in late August, or a Thank you page offer nobody has seen for a month.
Red Flags in a Checkout App Pitch
• The screenshot shows offers inside checkout, and you're not on Plus.
• It sells one-page checkout or basic recovery emails as a feature.
• It relied on additional scripts and hasn't said what it does now.
• Its commission has no cap at the upsell revenue you're aiming for.
Are you serious about the 70%? Then start with the part no app touches: shipping cost shown before checkout, and a delivery date next to the button. Those are pricing and page decisions, and they sit in front of every app on this list.
The stack review takes fifteen minutes. List every app that touches your cart, checkout or Thank you page. Put each one in one of the four places from the table above. Then open your own Thank you page on your phone and see what survived August 26.
The rule we'd start from is simple: offers go after the payment unless a test with checkout completion as the guardrail earns them an earlier slot.
For the part of the page just before checkout, where Baymard's cost and delivery questions get answered or don't, our product page optimization checklist covers the button area.
The pay button isn't a place to sell. It's the place to get out of the way.

Do you have any questions left?
Here are the answers for you
It depends on where you want offers to appear. ReConvert is strongest after the purchase, on post-purchase and Thank you pages. Rebuy is strongest in the cart and on product pages. Bold AI Upsell charges a commission on results. On a standard Shopify plan, none of them can place offers inside the checkout steps, which Shopify limits to Plus.
Yes. One-page checkout became Shopify's default checkout in October 2023, according to Shopify's changelog, so most stores don't need an app for it.
Not directly for most causes. Baymard's 2025 research puts the top reasons at extra costs (40%) and slow delivery (20%), which are pricing and shipping decisions. Shopify's own abandoned checkout emails, under Apps, Messaging, Automations, recover some of those who leave, at no extra cost.
Yes, when they add a decision before payment. An in-checkout offer that lifts average order value by 2.5% loses money if it costs more than about 2.4% of completed checkouts. Offers after payment can't reduce completion, because the order is already confirmed.
Only for apps that add content to the information, shipping and payment steps. On any plan, apps can work in the cart, on the post-purchase page and on the Thank you and Order status pages.
The additional scripts box closed to edits in August 2025, and non-Plus stores had until August 26, 2026 to move to the new Thank you and Order status pages; Plus stores had until August 28, 2025. Anything built with additional scripts has to be rebuilt there. Shopify's instruction is to replace scripts with pixels in Customer events and app blocks in the editor.

Yes - but as an addition to our battle-tested frameworks, not the foundation.
We've built a proprietary AI system that validates every hypothesis against your actual buyer personas before we build anything. This ensures we only create optimisations your customers will genuinely respond to.
How it works:
- Our frameworks identify conversion opportunities
- We generate psychology-first hypotheses
- AI-trained buyer personas validate each hypothesis
- We ask: "Does this genuinely serve customer needs—not manipulate?"
- Only validated hypotheses get built and tested
This approach achieves 84% test success rate vs 45% industry average - because we validate with your actual customers before building, not after.
AI enhances our care-driven methodology. It doesn't replace genuine customer understanding.
